6thMay ’87 – Girls participated in the Elocution Competition organized by the Lion’s Club. Several of our girls secured places in their sections and the school was awarded the ‘Shield for the Year’.

 

6thOct ’93 – The school children responded generously to the appeal of the Prime Minister for the earthquake victims and made a donation for the relief operations. The school also collected a substantial amount for the construction of a School for the Blind and was awarded a prize for the highest contribution in the town.

 

10thNov ’09– Lisa Lamar was selected for the Best Guides Award and she received the award from His Excellency, the Governor of Meghalaya, Shri R.S. Mooshahary.

 

27thNov ’09– There was a gathering in the school hall which included Sr. Ponnamma, the Principal, Staff, students and ex-pupils. It began with a prayer service after which a DVD of the Centenary Celebration was released by the Principal, Mrs. C. M. Nongrum. A special DVD by the Alumnae was also released by Sr. Ponnamma.

 

5thMay ’10– The school offered a Thanksgiving Mass for the grand success of the Centenary Celebration. The main celebrant was His Grace, Rev. Archbishop Dominic Jala.

 

5thJun ’10– An inter-school Painting Competition was organized by the “The People’s Learning Centre”, Shillong. The theme was “Clean our Rivers or Compromise our Future”. Afreen K. Khyriem of class VIII won the Second Prize and she was also adjudged the winner for Best Caption.

15thAug ’10– The school won the First Prize for the March Past during the Independence Day celebrations held in Polo Ground.

7thSept ’10– A Debate was organized by Lady Keane School. The topic was “Abolition of Corporal Punishment has lead to indiscipline in schools”. The participants were Iaphi Thiarnylla Tariang and Sonia Bhattacharya. The latter was declared the Best Speaker.

3rdOct ’10– The Conventional Cross for the 8thNational Youth Convention held in Shillong arrived in the Laitumkhrah Parish on the 3rdOctober 2010. Schools in Laitumkhrah lined up along the roadside to welcome the Cross. Fifty four of our school girls stood along the road in front of Calvary to welcome the Cross with claps and cheers. Then they joined the procession with all the others all the way to the Cathedral. The Principal Mrs. C.M. Nongrum along with two teachers accompanied the girls on this day.

11thNov ’10– A Centenary Rally was organized by Bharat Scouts and Guides HQ, Shillong. Thirty one girl guides of the Loreto Guide Company attended the Rally. Mrs Adrita Chakravorty, the Guide Captain was awarded with a Medal of Merit on the same day.

22ndFeb ‘11– Orientation Programme for the teachers was held as a follow-up to the previous year’s Orientation which was conducted by Sr. Helen. The teachers also elected Mrs. S. Blah as the Designated Officer and Mrs. S. Pradhan as the support person. The role of these officers is to provide a safe environment for children and vulnerable adults. They have to protect them from neglect, emotional, physical and sexual abuse, social, emotional and intellectual harm.

21stApr ‘11– In the Inter-school Sports, Loreto Convent was awarded the 1stPrize for the Best March Past.

6thMay ‘11- A Debate Competition was conducted by Jeebon Roy Memorial on “Weekly Assessment – A preference to terminal Examination”. The participants, Sonia Bhattacharya won the award for Best Speaker while the Runner-up Speaker award went to Meghalee Bose.

18thMay 2011– Iaphithiarnylla Tariang and Meghalee Bose took part in the District Level Science Exhibition 2011 in which 112 schools also participated. The two girls bagged the First Position out of 83 schools from Group ‘A’ for their project ‘Carbon Footprint’. They were selected to represent the schools at the the State Level.

28thJun 2011– Meghalee Bose was awarded 2ndPrize at the State Level Science Exhibition 2011 and qualified for the National Level.

13thAug ’11– The National Level Science Exhibition ‘INSPIRE’ was held from the 14thto 16thAugust 2011 in Delhi. Meghalee Bose represented Meghalaya in this grand event. She was selected as one of the top 714 students in India from over 2.1 lakh ‘INSPIRE’ participants. The President of India also attended the exhibition.

29thAug ’12– The National Sports Day was held in Polo Ground, Shillong. On this day, Sonia Langstieh was awarded India’s National Player in the field of Karate for earning 2 golds and 1 silver in the JKAI games.

8thOct ’12– The Assam Valley School (District Sonitpur, Assam) organized the East India Debates. Sonia Bhattacharya, Nikita Pyngrope, Meghalee Bose and Andreana Khriam represented our school. The girls did the school proud by winning two rounds of the Pre-Quarter Finals and the Quarter Finals to reach the Semi Finals. Fifteen well known schools of the country took part in this competition. Sonia Bhattacharya won the award for the Most Promising Debater of the event.

1stNov ’11– An Inter-school Debate Competition sponsored by Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd. was held in St. Mary’s, Shillong. Our school was represented by Sonia Bhattacharya and Meghalee Bose. The 2ndPrize went to Meghalee Bose and Loreto Convent received the Best Team Award.

5thDec ’11– The children participated in the Inaugural function of “The Archery Association of Meghalaya – 34thJunior National Archery Championship 2011”. The students of classes III, IV and V presented a beautiful Drill Display and students of classes VI – X sung the Welcome Song. Our girls were also the placard bearers for the occasion.

2012– Loreto Convent Shillong got a new administrative set up. The serene surroundings once again became vibrant with life and activities as the new Principal and new coordinators took charge of the administration and academic progress of the school.

17th– 18thFeb ’12– Before the students rushed in, a seminar was conducted for the teachers and the resource person was Fr. P.D. Johny, sdb, Principal, B.Ed College, Tura. The Theme of the seminar was “The Role of a teacher in the life of the student”. The programme was integrated with educational video clips which acted like insights to see the teachers’ classroom situations and interaction with the students. He insisted on using teaching aids and modern techniques to help in better understanding.

The Staff, parents and students were elated that the reins of the school has gone back into the hands of the nuns.

 

1998: An Inter School Green Festival was organized by an Environment Conscious Organization, Loreto received the Best Green School Prize.

 

Mar 99 – For the first time Loreto was selected as a Centre for the SSLC Examination.

The Kargil War came as a painful experience for the country. The Senior School students with the help of the teachers organized a show and the proceeds of Rs. 26,500 was handed over to Major General Dua, GOC Eastern Command for the Army Central Welfare Fund.

 

15thSept 01 : Loreto Convent won a brilliant victory in the prestigious Inter School Basketball Tournament organized by St. Anthony’s School.

 

Loreto Convent was the winner in the March Past organized by Pine Mount Schoolin 2002.

 

13thSept 03 – A very important day for Loreto as we celebrated the coming together of the Irish and the North American Branch. The day began with a Mass followed by refreshments. A large group of religious which included priests and sisters from different congregations were a part of this event. Staff members and students with their parents also attended the function. An exhibition of the history of Loreto Shillong was put up and facts and photographs displayed showcased the Irish and American Branches.

 

17thSept 03 : Loreto Convent won the Inter School Basketball Tournament organized by the Directorate of Sports and Youth Affairs, Govt. of Meghalaya.

 

8thApr ’04: Our girls won the Basketball Finals in the Inter School Basketball Tournament organized by St. Mary’s School.

 

In the same year, it also won the First Prize in the March Past organized by Pine Mount School.

 

5thMar ’05: Our School participated in the St. Mary’s School Sports and bagged the First Prize in the 100m, 200m, 4x100m Relay Race and March Past, Lariphylla Myrthong bagged the trophy for the Best Athlete.

 

15thApr ’05: Loreto Convent bagged the First Prize in the 4x100m Relay Race in the St. Edmund’s Sports Meet.

 

10th– 12thMay ’05: Inter School Sports meet held in Polo Ground, organised by the Directorate of Sports and Youth Affairs, Govt. of Meghalaya. Loreto Convent came home victorious as we bagged the Gold in all the sporting events. Lariphylla Myrthong was awarded the trophy for the Best Athlete. We were also the proud winners of Best Overall Championship Trophy.

 

23rdSept ’05– A historic event for the people of this hill station as our President, His Excellency A.P.J. Abdul Kalam made his maiden visit especially with the view to meeting the students of Shillong. Our Principal, Sr. Celine Pinto along with twenty students met the President at Raj Bhavan.

 

1stDec ’05– The much cherished dream of releasing a school magazine finally took shape when ‘Impressions’ was released on the 1stDec ’05. The Magazine came along with a CD, which covered most of the activities of the academic session.

 

April 2006:

  • Loreto Convent was the Overall Champion in the Inter School Athletics Meet.
  • Emihaka Warjri was awarded the Best Athlete in the under 14 years category.
  • Lariphylla Myrthong was awarded the Best Athlete in the under 17 years category.

17thSept ’06 : In the annual Commitment Day Celebration, YCSers of Loreto Convent won the First Prize in the Singing Competition.

 

13thMay ’07: The Shillong Hill was alive with the sound of prayer and music, culminating in the pronouncement of the Final Vows of Srs. Monica Suchiang, A. Anitha, Sunila Toppo and Easterla Badwar. A vast crowd of family, friends, religious and parishioners were a witness to this solemn occasion. His Grace Rev. Archbishop Dominic Jala was the chief celebrant along with Bishop Victor Lyngdoh and a number of co-celebrants. For the first time in living memory such a large number of Sisters were present in Shillong at one time. The staff and students of Loreto Convent, Shillong excelled themselves in exquisite singing, decorations and two typical dances of the Meghalaya Hills as a part of the Eucharistic Celebration. Sr. Celine Pinto and the young community in Shillong were highly commended for the detailed planning, organizing and hard labour involved in enabling the day to flow so smoothly and so joyfully.

 

22nd– 24thMay ’07:

 

May ’07- Loreto Convent won the Best School award for Recitation Competition.

 

7thSept ’07– The Police Officials came to speak to the Senior School students in order to make them aware of the traffic signs and rules to be followed on the road.

 

13thSept ’07– 11 students and 2 teachers in charge of the group left for Kolkatta to participate in a three day All India Loreto Meet. They took part in the JPIC Orientation as well as a Dance Programme.

 

14thSept ’07– Some students from classes Nursery and KG went to Spring Field School for the Stephanie Melarika Memorial Recitation Competition. Loreto Convent was awarded the trophy for the Best School.

 

20th– 22ndSept ’07– 11 girls participated in the Inter-school Karate Championship. Loreto Convent received the trophy for the ‘Most Promising School’.

 

20th- 22ndSept ’07– In the 16thInter School Tournament 2008, Sonia Langstieh won 1 Gold and 2 Silver medals and Banylla Shallam got the best Karateka for Girls Junior category. Loreto Convent was awarded the ‘Most Promising School’. Since 1997, Loreto Convent has won Prizes for Recitation and Elocution in English, Khasi, Hindi and Bengali organized by Ram Krishna Mission. It has been winning the Overall Champions Shield for the last ten years

 

26thSept ’07– Mr. Barry O’Brien visited school. He gave some useful tips to the students and fired them with enthusiasm regarding awareness of things that happen around us and how to acquire general knowledge.

 

2ndOct ’07– Pallabi Deb of class IX won the Guwahati Zonal of ‘The Teen of the Year 2007’.

 

18thMar ’08– For the first time our school organized an ‘Orange Exhibition’. A few schools were invited, the media and the students’ parents were also present. Different models like animals, the Taj Mahal, a ship, a musical band etc. using oranges were displayed.

 

 

28thMay ’08– Ibameaihun Kharsati, an NCC cadet received Rs. 5000 for CWS (Cadet Welfare Society) scholarship for 2007.

 

17thJun ’08– The entire school including the teachers and domestic staff received medicines to counteract Meningitis.

 

20thJun ’08: The announcement of a new lay Principal in the history of Loreto Convent, Shillong was made by Sr. Celine Pinto. Mrs. Catherine M. Nongrum was declared as the new Principal whose term would start from the 1stof July, 2008.

 

1stAug ‘08– Sr. Ponnamma T. Nadackal arrived in Loreto Shillong as the new Mother Superior and on the 5thshe was welcomed by the school in a special assembly.

 

In the year 2008, Loreto Convent was the winner in the March Past organized by Pine Mount School in their annual school sports.

 

June 2009– Frederica Grace Wahlang, a YCSer attended the 11th International Young Christian Movement (IYCS) Programme on ‘Asian Session and Council’ which was held at St. Luka’s Catholic Centre, Kota Padawan, Kuching, Malaysia.

 

  • In the District Sports held at Polo Ground, Emihaka Warjri won the Gold for 100m, 200m, long jump and 4x100m Relay Race (Under 17 years category).

 

  •  Loreto Convent was awarded the Overall Champions Trophy for the under 17 category in the Inter School Athletics Meet organized by the Directorate of Sports and Youth Affairs.

25th March 2013: The Silver Jubilee of Mrs. S. Blah was celebrated on the 25th March ’13. There was a prayer service for her in the morning in the School Hall, it was followed by a lunch. Gifts and bouquets were also given by the Principal and the staff.

 

26th April 2013: Loreto Convent, Shillong. The School Sports Day was held at Don Bosco Mini Stadium.

The programme began with a theme song “The Flame” followed by a Kaleidoscope of colours (Cultural Dances).

The Chief Guest was Dr. M.Ampareen Lyngdoh, Minister of Urban Affairs, Government of Meghalaya and the Guest of Honour was Fr.Bernard Pala, Principal of St.Anthony’s Higher Secondary School, Shillong.

Our girls participated in the different athletic events and the drill displays were spectacular and very colourful. The drill displays showcased were as follows:-

KG, I & II    : Sisters in arms                                                                III, IV & V    : Magical Mash Up

VI & VII      : Beautiful colours under the Sun                                     VIII, IX & X    : Fantastic Fan Fantasy

A number of schools were also invited to participate in the Inter-school 4x100m relay.

 

22nd May, 2013:There was a Memorial Mass for the repose of the departed soul of Sr. Stella Lahiry in Loreto Convent, Shillong. A sense of peace prevailed in the School Chapel as a small group gathered to pray for her soul.  The Principal with the Sisters of the Community, some members of the staff, parents, past pupils and former teachers came together in song and prayer for this special intention.

Fr. John Wahlang of Christ King College was the Main Celebrant and Fr. David from Chennai was the Co-celebrant. Fr. John gave a beautiful homily that touched the hearts of those present.

After the Mass, everyone was invited for tea and refreshments. They all remembered Sr. Stella fondly. She will definitely stay in our hearts for a long time to come.

1st April 2016: Ms. Miranda Kharsyiemiong's Silver Jubilee Celebration

This was a red-letter day for the school as one of their most loved teachers Ms. Miranda Kharsyiemiong celebrated her twentyfive years of service in this institution. The day began with a solemn Mass celebrated by His Grace Dominic Jala, the Archbishop of Shillong and the co-celebrant was Fr. Devasia. Mass was followed by a short break and an entertainment programme prepared by the girls of different classes including class III 'B' of which Ms. Kharsyiemiong is the class teacher. The day ended with a scrumptious lunch which the Sisters, Staff, the Archbishop and Fr. Devasia enjoyed as one big family.

Farewell for Sr. Shanta

The farewell for the Vice Principal, Sr. Shanta was held on the 12th May, 2016. It started with a meaningful prayer service which touched Sister's heart. A short programme followed, where students of different classes put up dances and songs. The classes she taught Hindi in, sang special numbers. Sr. Shanta gave the gathering a touching message at the end.
Though Sister was in Loreto Convent, Shillong for a brief period of eleven months, she made a difference to the school. She will be remembered fondly. May God be her companion and guide as she continues His mission.
 

Farewell for Sr. Molly Francis

The school hall was high on emotions as the school gathered to give Sr. Molly Francis a befitting Farewell on the 27th May, 2016. A meaningful and touching Prayer Service had been prepared especially for Sister. This was followed by a programme which included songs, dances and poetry recitation by the students. The teachers also presented a blessing song for her. The programme ended with a Power Point Presentation titled 'A Tribute to Sr. Molly.' It captured the different sides of Sr. Molly and her moments spent in Loreto Convent, Shillong in the two and a half years that she was here. (Sr. Molly Francis had joined this school on the 15th August, 2013).
At the end, Sister spoke to everyone gathered, thanking and promising each, her prayers. After this, she met and interacted with the students as they crowded around her with cards and flowers. Sr. Molly will be remembered for her dedication, enthusiasm and spirit to achieve perfection. Her generosity and love for the less privileged and the old can also never be forgotten. May God bless her in the days to come as she strives to fulfill His plans wherever she may be. 

WELCOMING THE NEW PRINCIPAL

Sr. Archana Gomes IBVM, the new Principal, was welcomed to the school on May 31st, 2016. A meaningful prayer service was conducted for the occasion which was followed by a Welcome Song. Towards the end of the programme, Sr. Archana introduced Sr. Tina Farias IBVM, to the school as the new Superior who is also the Secretary of the Educational Society of Loreto Convent Shillong. At the end of the programme the new Principal had a meeting with the teachers.
