Centenary Celebration

The Centenary Celebration was a milestone in the history of Loreto Convent in Shillong, “The Scotland of the East”. After completing a century in the year 2009, the Loreto Sisters and staff are going strong with their valuable service of imparting moral and value based education to the people of Meghalaya, empowering the girl-child and women, especially equipping the poor to take their place in society as responsible citizens.

The staff and students under the guidance of the Superior, Sr. Ponnamma T. Nadackal and the Principal, Mrs. Catherine M. Nongrum made this occasion a memorable and historical event. Enthusiastic help was also rendered by the Alumnae at every step of the way. The week-long programme started with the Inaugural Mass at the Cathedral of Mary Help of Christians, Laitumkhrah. The celebrants were Bishop Victor Lyngdoh and (L) Bishop Vincent Kympat. In May 2010, the Centenary celebration was concluded with a Mass held in the school hall with His Grace Rev. Archbishop Dominic Jala as the celebrant.

18th May ’09 – The beginning of the Centenary Celebration.
It started with the Inaugural Mass at the Cathedral of Mary Help of Christians. The main celebrant was (L) Bishop Vincent Kympat of Jowai while Bishop Victor Lyngdoh of Nongstoin and Fr. Hilarius Lamare were the co-celebrants. The Cathedral came to life with glorious singing by the hostellers and the school children. At the end of the Mass, the message and blessing of the Holy Father, Pope Benedict XVI was read out.

The Mass was followed by the Inaugural Function for which the Chief Guest was the Governor of Meghalaya, Shri R.S. Mooshahary and the Guest of Honour was Sr. Antoinette Rodrigues, the Provincial.

19th May ’09 – An All India Loreto Schools Dance Programme was organized in which all the Loreto schools of India were invited to participate. Keeping with the theme “A Journey Through Time”, the fourteen Loreto schools (thirteen guest schools and the host school) had the audience in awe of their creativity and grace.

20th May ’09 – A Food Fest was held in the school campus. Many stalls with a variety of eatables were put up. At around the same time there was a get-together of the Loreto Alumnae Association Shillong (LAAS) in the school hall. Loreto girls of different batches and from different parts of the country and even beyond met and had an enjoyable time over brunch.

21st May ’09 – A Cultural Programme cum Variety Show entitled ‘Vibrant Hues’ was organized where students from classes Nursery – X gave their best performances and were applauded by a large gathering of guests and parents. The same evening saw a dinner with the visiting nuns and our very own sisters. Souvenirs were presented to all the guest sisters.

22nd May ’09 – There was a Basketball match between the Alumnae and Loreto Convent, Shillong in which the Alumnae won the match. Danish Rounders was also organized on the same day between different batches of the Alumnae.

23rd May ’09 –
The Celebration ended with a Concluding Mass which was celebrated in the school chapel. Archbishop Thomas Menamparampil of Guwahati was the main celebrant and Fr. Jacob Aluckal was the co-celebrant.

It was followed by a grand dinner for the sisters, the past pupils, the teachers and the office staff. Everyone was in their best attire and thoroughly enjoyed the tasty food and good music played by the live band ‘The Straight Brothers’.

10th Nov ’09 – Lisa Lamar was selected for the Best Guides Award and she received the award from His Excellency, the Governor of Meghalaya, Shri R.S. Mooshahary.

27th Nov ’09 – There was a gathering in the school hall which included Sr. Ponnamma, the Principal, Staff, students and ex-pupils. It began with a prayer service after which a DVD of the Centenary Celebration was released by the Principal, Mrs. C. M. Nongrum. A special DVD by the Alumnae was also released by Sr. Ponnamma.

5th May ’10 – The school offered a Thanksgiving Mass for the grand success of the Centenary Celebration. The main celebrant was His Grace, Rev. Archbishop Dominic Jala.
